FUTURE Self-Directed Track  - On hiatus, not accepting new registrants

Overview

Postdocs and PhD students who choose the Self-Directed track will participate in a 1-day professional development workshop and complete a career focused individual development plan (IDP). They will use their IDP to guide their career exploration and preparation activities for the coming year.

To be eligible for participation in FUTURE you must be a UC Davis PhD graduate student or postdoctoral scholar who is conducting research in the biomedical sciences, which we broadly define as any research that is related to advancing health.

As a participant in the Self-Directed Track of the FUTURE program, you will have access to the following benefits:

  • FUTURE Career Exploration Fund to offset expenses related to career exploration activities
  • Career Explorers Network - peer group sharing of career related resources and information
  • FUTURE-specific activities such as networking events and meet-ups
  • Career Sparks - monthly motivators and reminders via text or email

As a member of the Self-Directed Track of the FUTURE program, you will:

  1. Complete program Entry and Exit Surveys sponsored by the UCD FUTURE program and NIH BEST Consortium
  2. Participate in a 1-Day Career Gear Up Professional Development Workshop (8am-5pm)

  5. Share your experiences with and learn from other participants in the program (Career Explorers Network)
Duration

Minimum:  2 quarters; Maximum:  to end of postdoc position or graduation from degree program

Eligibility

FUTURE is open to all UC Davis postdocs and PhD students who are conducting research related to advancing health. There is no application and selection process required to participate in the Self-Directed track, but registration is required to become a FUTURE participant and to receive the benefits described in the Overview. Because the level of participation and hours devoted to career exploration are self-directed and can be as few or as many as one's schedule allows, we do not require a mentor letter of support for participation in this track.
